All this bid served to do, however, was to encourage South, who now felt certain that his Ace-Queen of hearts meant no heart losers. Hence South was emboldened to cue-bid in spades and later in his other suit, hearts; whereupon North naturally jumped to the Small Slam.

Of course if East had passed (as we think he should have done), or merely raised his partner's spades in the event that he felt compelled to bid, North and South might still have bid the Slam. But East with the pointless three-heart bid had made it particularly easy for them. (Copyright, 1988, By The Four Aces)
