CHINA RELIEF FUND APPEAL BY LORD MAYOR

London, To-day. A moving appeal for the China Relief Fund, signed by the Lord Mayor of Manchester, the Mayor of Salford, the Bishop of Manchester, Sir Ken- neth Stewart (formerly of Maitland & Co. of Shanghai and now Director of the Manchester Chamber of Commerce), and thirteen other prominent Lancashire personalities, appears in the "Manchester Guardian.”

In China, that great and desolated land, says the. appeal, almost everything is wanted food, clothing and medical requisites.

SURPRISE ARGENTINE MOVE

Lima, To-day.

It is the opinion here that the work of the Pan-American Con- ference is proceeding slowly ow- ing to the introduction of foreign problems, such as Spain, into the scope of the discussions.

Another factor is the sudden departure of the Argentine For---- eign Minister, whose movements have given rise to rumours. Reuter.

CONTROL OF

It is for this suffering and heroic people in their darkest hour, standing firm to the ideals of free- dom and national independence, that we again ask help.

Concurrently with the appeal, the first year's Report of the Manches- ter China Relief Committee shows that £3,533 was collected, of which £363 was retained against future expenses and the

balance all ex- pended in China.

BANDAGE-MAKING Churches, industry, the profes- sions and Trade Unions are among the contributors, and many work- ing parties have been formed to make bandages which are specially needed.

Three hundred successful meet- ings were held and 160,000 leaflets and a vast number of posters and pamphlets distributed.-Reuter.

BRITISH IMPORT KWANGTUNG

London, To-day. The Minister of Agriculture announced in the Commons that in view of the large proportions | of supplies which come from Australia and New Zealand, ap- proaches have been made to these Dominions to regulate imports of mutton and lamb as from the beginning of 1939.

The Government considered that recovery of the home sheep indus- try would be accelerated by closer control of imported supplies.

It would be in the interests of

all suppliers, and would introduce a very desirable element of con- fidence into the sheep market.

BEEF COUNCIL

The functions of the Empire Beef Council would be enlarged

so it might also consider future supplies of mutton and lamb to United Kingdom markets.

While

the Council

would con-

sider the supply situation as a whole, the United Kingdom Govern- ment would reserve to itself res- ponsibility regarding the regula- tion of imports from foreign- coun- tries. British Wireless..
