Efforts Of Senor Madariaga Criticised
Burgos, To-day.
NEARLY SIX HOURS' SOCCER AND NO RESULT YET
London, To-day.
Halifax and Mansfield drew for the third time yesterday. In the Second Round of the F.A. Cup.
Playing at Doncaster, the match resulted in a scoreless tie after extra time.-Reuter,
After both sides in the Spanish civil war have firm- ||
ly protested against any attempt at mediation which, according to rumour, was to be made by Papal and other quarters, the Nationalist or- gan, "Diario Vasco" makes what appears to be an inspired pronouncement in its latest issue. The present lull in the fighting in Spain-both sides reported in their war bulletins last night that quietness prevailed on all fronts is the prime SUBSTITUTE K.C.R. reason why so much space is being given to ru- mours of an armistice.
The Spanish newspaper makes mention of a report originating in Paris to the effect that a so-called Spanish Peace Committee which is presided over by Senor Madariaga, had with the backing of French and British peace societies, asked the Vatican and the Pan-American Congress in Lima to use their good offices to bring about a Christmas- tide truce in Spain.
The "Diarie Vasco" replies by publishing a heart-rending account of the heroic defence of Teruel which occurred just twelve months
ago.
It reproduces the message sent out by Colonel Barba from the famous seminary where he was making his final stand: "We have had nothing to eat or drink for four days. Three hundred of our men are slain, seven hundred of our comrades are wounded and only few survivors and some sym- bolic ruins bear witness to our defence. We are proud of it. The end has now come. Long live Spain."
"Does Senor Madariaga believe," asks the Diario Vasco, "that after having witnessed such happenings the Spanish people is prepared to speak about a Christmastide truce? No. The enemy will never steal his way into the impregnable for- tress of the renascent Spain. The Nationalist Spain is alive to these things and is not prepared to allow itself to be tricked into surrender."

BURMA ROUTE TO
EX-ARMY CHIEF SUICIDE RUMOUR
Paris, To-day. The "Ordre" publishes a rumour circulating in Paris to the effect that General Antonescu, former Com- mander-in-Chief of the Rumanian army who was recently arrested, had committed suicide in his prison cell.
The newspaper adds that it has been unable to obtain confirmation.
Only recently Colonel Vulturescu, of the Rumanian army, was reported · to have taken his life after an in- cident in a Bucharest cabaret, in which was involved a young woman
