THREE AUTUMN CHAMPIONS FEATURED

Last Race Meeting Of 1938

Silkylight: Courting Eve And Salvage Master Are Favoured To Win

R. B. MOLLER DOWN FROM SHANGHAI TO RIDE DERBY CHAMPION

Thrilling Australian Classic?

(By "RAPIER”)

HE Thirteenth Extra Race Meeting, to be held at the Valley will bring to a close the racing season for 1938. There will then be an interval of exactly two months, when racing will again be in full swing, with the advent of the 1939 Annual Race Meeting.

THE to-morrow under the auspices of Hong Kong Jockey Club,

Interest in to-morrow's racing has been greatly accentuated | by the fact that the three Autumn Champions will be contested, entries for which will not be known until they are” announced on the board.

It is anticipated that the weather with Able Amazon second and Derby will again prove ideal and I shall not Day third. be surprised if this attendance consti- tutes an all-time record for an extra race meeting.

RACE NO. 1: HONG KONG AUTUMN CHAMPIONS: 11⁄4

MILES

The programme opens with this grand race, in which I expect to see the following facing the starter:-

CONFUSION BAY (MR. H. J. A.

HEARNE)

RACE NO. 3; TARDY HANDI- CAP: ONE MILE

I am going to nominate Rose Jane to win, with Jungle Jim (Mr. Wade) second, and probably Lucky taking the other position.

RACE NO. 4: QUEENSLAND AUTUMN CHAMPIONS:

1 MILES

Class China ponies. Flybynight (Mr. |S. C. Liang) came third to Racing Boy over six furlongs in the Heart O'Midlo- thian Handicap, at the last meeting, and should be prominent here. Five Rulers carried 163 lbs. when it finished third to Easy Time and Wenning in the Powderhall Handicap, but for to-mor- row it has come down by 23 lbs. Royal Highness has been knocking at the door for some time and perhaps it may do the trick to-morrow.

I feel, however, that Plain View is going to win. It did not make the trip to Macao and, although it has, only been placed on previous occasions, I think that its chances of winning to- morrow are rather bright. I nominate Plain View to win, with Royal High- ness second and Five Rulers third,

RACE NO. 6: HONG KONG SUB-GRIFFINS AUTUMN CHAMPIONS: 11⁄4 MILES

The field here will also be somewhat

What a grand race this will turn out limited, with Louis XIV and Smiling to be. With the best among the Aus-Thru, the two best subs. of this season, tralian ponies running, it will be a race not participating. The following will worth going a long way to see. The only pony capable of extending Silkylight is Confusion Bay, which will be ridden by Mr. Hearne, but after the grand performance which Silkylight put up in the H.K. St. Leger, I am afraid that good as Confusion Bay un- doubtedly is, it will find its task a hope- less one.

Mr. Hearne, however, may be relied upon to get the best out of his mount,, and the race should prove most inter- esting.

Bear Claw, a stalwart of the old brigade, will have to take a back seat, and the best it can hope for in this race is third place. I nominate Silky- light to win, with Confusion Bay sec- ond, leaving Bear Claw and Cameron- ian to fight out the other minor posi- tion.

RACE NO. 2: LAGGARDS' HAN- DICAP: ONE MILE;

Only five ponies have been entered for this race, and I expect to see them all starting, 1.0.:

ABLE AMAZON (MR, S. W.

A GRAND TIME (MR.

V. V.

DERBY DAY (MR. S. C. LIANG) DICK TURPIN. (MR. W. G. POY) RANGER (MR. A. W. RAYMOND)

The old warrior Able Amazon has been allotted top weight of 165 lbs., but in view of its evident return to form (it came in third a fortnight ago) after having been absent from several meetings, I suppose it will take tho lion's share in the betting.

It is only natural to assume that its only opposition will come from Ranger, which will be handled by Mr. Raymond. With only 152 lbs. to carry, I consider Ranger has a great chance of winning. Mr. Raymond knows how to ride Aus- tralian ponies, and I think that his ex- perience in this department will turn the scales in favour of Ranger against Able Amazon.

to

Derby Day, although very lightly treated, will find the distance far too long and Dick Turpin will have start off well in order to be in the running. I nominkte Hanger to win,'

Rooifly (Mr. Poy) however, must be regarded as a dangerous contender by virtue of the fact that it will be carry. ing only 135 lbs.

A Great Time should win, with Rooi- fly second and Strathcarrick third.

RACE NO. 8: FINALE HAN-

DICAP: ONE MILE

"E" Class China ponies will wind up the day's and the year's programme.

At the previous meeting, Easy Time and Wenning dead-heated and havo both been penalised 6 lbs. The race was then over six furlongs, whereas to. morrow it will be longer, and on that account I suggest Wenning to win, as I believe that it is much the stronger of the two.

Stymie and Yum Sing may find the distance too long, and for an outsider I advise taking Sea Dragon, which will be ridden by Mr. B. L. Tao,

Carrying top weight of 168 lbs. I think we can safely leave Tabby Cat (Mr. Pih) entirely out of the running, unless it can do the same as Rose Eve- lyn did. I wonder! Wenning is my choice as the winner with Easy Time second, leaving Sea Dragon or Stymie for third position.
