PLANS FOR THE NATIONAL REGISTER
LONDON, TO-DAY. REPLYING ON BEHALF OF THE GOVERNMENT TO THE DE- BATE IN THE LORDS ON THE NATIONAL REGISTER, THE EARL OF BIRKENHEAD SAID THE REGISTER WAS BEING PREPARED IN SUCH A WAY THAT IT COULD BE QUICKLY COMPLETED IN AN EMER- GENCY WITHOUT UNDULY DIS- TURBING INDUSTRY.
All interests would be fully re- presented on local committees.
It was intended that men engag- ed in key industries who were skill- ed men should not be taken from their occupations if that could be avoided.
Men who undertook to serve in national services such as fire brigades would certainly be tained in those services at least during the early stages of an em- ergency.
