improve flow characteristics at the tank.

11.17 Routine maintenance of access roads, catchwaters, control gates, treatment works, pumping stations, staff quarters and depots, and the maintenance and cleaning of service reservoirs continued.

11.18 Heavy rainstorms in August caused considerable damage to a number of Waterworks installations, the estimated cost of repairs being $4,200,000.

Operations Sub-Division

11.19 The Government computer was used in connection with reservoir system operations and for the determination of consumption statistics and other supply criteria.

11.20 A number of computer analyses were carried out to study the need for improvement of the water supply system, involving trunk feeds and additional resources.

11.21 Analysis by computer of the 1974 and part of 1975 trade consumption statistics was completed. The computer programmes were amended to suit the computerised billing system for trade accounts.

11.22 Work continued on the routine per-capita consumption study and the analysis of monthly consumption from water accounts, for use in estimating demand trends by consumer categories.

11.23 Monitoring of the performance of dams continued and the lowering of an old dam was carried out.

Hydrological Section

11.24 The responsibility for maintenance of all raingauge and evaporation stations was transferred to the Royal Observatory. Routine maintenance of 26 stream and reservoir gauging stations and one hydrometric station continued. For the High Island Water Scheme, weekly readings of water level at 19 observation wells and 12 low flow weirs continued. In connection with development of minor catchments in North East Plover Cove, construction of three observation wells was completed and weekly readings were commenced.

11.25 Construction of Siu Lek Yuen Upper stream gauging station was completed and modification of Shing Mun Catchwater gauging station was carried out.

11.26 The printing of Volume IX of "Hong Kong Rainfall and Runoff" in respect of data collected up to the end of March 1973 was started. Data processing for Volume X was completed and preparation for printing was nearly completed. Data abstraction for Volume XI was completed and that for Volume XII was in hand.

11.27 Testing and amendment of the computer programmes for a revised system of processing, accommodation, and presentation of hydrological data were completed.
