GENERAL
11.01 The Waterworks Office is responsible for all aspects of water supply and distribution carried out by Government. The work is divided among eight divisions and four units each with specific responsibilities as shown on the operation and organisation chart. Consulting engineers are appointed to carry out planning feasibility studies and construction of new works which require specialist knowledge or at times when the resources of the Office are fully extended. A list of projects undertaken by consultants is given at Appendix BB.
New Works and a large proportion of the maintenance work are carried out by contract but the operation of supply, the distribution of water and maintenance of meters and machinery are done by Waterworks staff.
11.02 A satisfactory water storage position and average rainfall enabled a 24-hour supply to be maintained throughout the year, although a record low winter rainfall coupled with high demand had depleted the reservoirs to 57% of capacity by the end of the year.
11.03 Erection and commissioning of the 181,840 cubic metres per day single purpose desalting plant was virtually completed. The 273 million cubic metres capacity High Island reservoir progressed satisfactorily. The West Dam was substantially completed while the East Dam was constructed to +6m PD. Lowland pumping stations except one were completed.
11.04 Appendix BB gives details of works under construction and works completed during the year.
11.05 The Department is represented on various committees and boards including:-
Committee Representative(s)
Water Resources Development Committee Director of Water Supplies
High Island Progress Sub-Committee Director of Water Supplies
Country Parks Board Director of Water Supplies
