MYSTERY CESSATION OF ITALIAN ABUSE OF

FRENCH "PROVOCATEURS"

Rome, To-day.

Press comments on the alleged French provocation in Tunis were almost entirely absent from the Italian newspapers yesterday morning after having occupied the front pages in the past few days. Significance of this, as well as the whole policy which Italy intends to pursue in regard to Tunis, is a mystery to observers here.

Many feel that much will depend There, however, is no authorita- on the internal strength of Francé,tive-indication-on-these-points- and that so long as Premier Reuter. Daladier has the reins fully in his hands, Tunis may be relegated to the "stalking horse" for Italy's. Suez Canal and Djibouti claims.

It is also said here that Italy may be uncertain of whether Ger- man support at present is ready to go any further than a mere press campaign.

ITALY THRUSTING AT BRITISH CLAIMS

London, To-day. Although Italian claims to Tunis are not taken seriously here, the Sunday newspapers leave no doubt as a matter of principle England would unrestrictedly. support France if the question should, at any time, become acute. The "Sunday Times" sees in the ad- vancement of the Italian claims an attempt by the Italian Government to block the British line of com- munications through the Mediter- ranean and demands that the Bri- tish government should take a determined attitude on the side of France. The "Observer" adopts a similar position, saying that ''the domination of Tunis by Italy would be equivalent to Italian domination of the Mediterranean, in which case England's right of way would de pend on Il Duce's authorisation.

Any attempt to reopen the ques- tion of Tunis would, moreover, have the effect of encouraging other States to put forward all sorts of preposterous claims.—Trans-Ocean.

TUNIS QUIETER

Rome, To-day. While the press continues the campaign for concessions from France, without specifying exactly what is wanted, there were no incidents or demonstra- tions in Tunis yesterday.

The newspaper "Corriere della Sera" links Italy's aspirations with Mr. Chamberlain's visit to Rome.

The paper hopes that "recogni- tion of the justness of her claims in the Mediterranean and over the Suez Canal" will result from the discussions.-Reuter.

FINLAND'S NEW MINISTER

Helsinski, To-day.

The appointment of Elias Erkko, in charge of the democratic paper "Helsingin Sanomat" to the post of Foreign Minister in succession to M. Holsti, is predicted by the Sunday papers, `

Erkko was formerly member of the Finnish Diplomatic Service and member of the Cabinet from 1982 to 1988. Trans-Ocean.
