Examination of Town Planning Layouts prepared by the Town Planning Office continued throughout the year. Recommendations and comments covering the traffic engineering aspects were made in each case. On the Island, a total of 46 traffic engineering schemes was prepared, including seven segments of the long term road proposals and two grade separated intersections.

On the Mainland, proposals for a large number of major traffic engineering schemes were formulated. Among the more important ones were the widening of Gascoigne Road and Chatham Road from Wylie Road to Hung Hom Interchange; the widening of Cornwall Street, Junction Road and Waterloo Road in connection with the grade separated intersection of these roads; New Territories Circular Road Fanling By-pass, Lam Kam to Fanling and Yuen Long East to Au Tau; New Territories Route 5 Tsuen Wan to Sha Tin (Environmental Impact Study); Route 5 Alignment in Tsuen Wan, and Route 16 Sha Tin to Lai Chi Kok.

Building development or redevelopment proposals including seven petrol filling stations, four schools, three cinemas and approximately 1,394 residential, commercial or industrial projects were examined. Comments on the traffic engineering aspects of these proposals were made to various Conferences, Government Departments and Authorised Persons.

The Traffic and Transport Survey Division acts as a service agency to any Government Department requiring transport studies, traffic surveys or planning forecasts associated with the internal movement of people or goods.
9.85
The findings of the more significant surveys are issued in the form of technical reports, of which 28 were distributed during the year. A total of 33 data records containing the results of studies of more restricted nature was also issued.
