In Central District on Hong Kong Island, traffic diversions to facilitate the construction of the Mass Transit Railway were introduced in April, 1976.

The Traffic Management Group for Mass Transit Railway Works held regular formal meetings to discuss, modify and implement the various traffic management schemes planned for maintaining, as far as possible, the movement of all road users during the construction of the railway. Continuing work in the Mass Transit Section was mainly concerned with ensuring that MTR contractors' proposals during the construction were in compliance with the Traffic Management Group's requirements.

An initial assessment was made of the traffic management implications of the possibility of extending the Mass Transit Railway from Prince Edward Station to Lai Chi Kok and Tsuen Wan.

There was a net decrease of two zebra crossings on the Island and a net increase of ten on the Mainland.

Work continued on the phasing out of existing stud crossings by replacing them with signal-controlled crossings or zebra crossings where warranted.

On Hong Kong Island, footbridges across Harcourt Road, Queen's Road East and Wong Chuk Hang Road were completed and opened for use.

A total of 227 traffic counts and 22 minor traffic studies were carried out in conjunction with traffic management schemes on the Island. On the Mainland, 117 traffic counts were conducted.
