The opening of Ching Cheung Road Extension and the completion of Po Kong Interchange Stage II marked the completion of the very important route along the Kowloon foothills linking the industrial town of Kwun Tong with the industrial town and container port of Kwai Chung.

Further projects were commenced on the major route linking Kowloon and Kwun Tong via the now completed Airport Tunnel. On the western approaches to the tunnel, work was started on the San Shan and Wuhu Interchanges, while at the eastern end a contract was let for the construction of the ramp leading into the tunnel and for the Administration Building. Design works for the West Kowloon Corridor from Yau Ma Tei to Lai Chi Kok continued. Consultants were appointed and a Steering Group was formed to investigate and prepare a feasibility report on Stage II of the Tsuen Wan By-pass.
Works in the New Territories

Satisfactory progress was maintained on the construction of the first stage of Tuen Mun Road which, with the associated Sham Tseng Viaduct, will provide a major new route linking the rapidly developing new towns of Tuen Mun, Tsuen Wan and Kwai Chung. Work on this 15.3 km project was over 75% complete at the end of the year.
