Road and the new roads to the cargo handling area in Rambler Channel Typhoon Shelter were actively pursued.

In the Sai Kung Peninsula, planning for the improvement of Clearwater Bay Road between Anderson Road and Hang Hau Road was well advanced. Planning for the extension of the nullah and construction of a new road on the reclamation in Sai Kung Town was started.

The construction of the carriageway and ancillary works for the second tube of the Lion Rock Tunnel was in progress and the construction of the second carriageway from the north tunnel portal to Sha Tin and the widening of the existing vehicular bridge across Shing Mun River were also started.

On Lantau Island, phased improvement works on the section of South Lantau Road from Cheung Sha to Tong Fuk were commenced and satisfactory progress was maintained.

Maintenance

9.38

Normal maintenance and improvement of the road network and the associated drainage systems in the New Territories played an increasingly important role. In addition, maintenance and extension of the cemeteries at Wo Hop Shek and in Cheung Chau were undertaken, expenditure on these being $1.57 million for the year.

Design of the Hill Road flyover linking Pok Fu Lam Road with Connaught Road was substantially completed, while work continued on the designs of Waterloo Road - Cornwall Street flyover, Texaco Road flyover across Castle Peak Road, Stage I of Tsuen Wan By-pass, and the superstructure of Kwun Tong Road flyover at Lai Yip Street.

Both the design and construction of the Man Kam To Bridge across Shum Chun River was completed during the year. Designs have been prepared for a footbridge across Pok Fu Lam Road near Queen Mary Hospital and for 3 subways across Nathan Road at Saigon, Soy and Bute Streets.
