Planned maintenance, including grates and refractories, was undertaken by plant staff on the original four units during the year.

8.43 The Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'A' was in continuous operation throughout the first quarter, during which period the turbo-alternator condenser was retubed. Three units operated continuously during the second and third quarters except for a 3-week shut down when major repairs of equipment and modifications to the main by-pass duct were carried out. In the fourth quarter, two units were shut down for 12 days for repairs and re-installation of bricking of casing tiles in the common hot gas ducting.

During the year, a pilot electrostatic precipitator was completed by the end of the year; this plant is expected to be commissioned in May 1977. Since the re-tubing of the turbo-alternator condenser and subsequent ferrous sulphate treatment, low shut-down periods for tube cleaning have been experienced and the turbo-alternator has been almost on continuous load. No tube failures have been experienced.

8.44 Except for two shut-down periods of 14 days and 18 days each, the Lai Chi Kok compost plant operated continuously throughout the year. A total of 449 tonnes of compost was produced.

8.45 The Kennedy Town Abattoir operated 24 hours a day until the middle of the year, when the installation of slaughter-hall equipment was completed. Thereafter the abattoir reverted to normal 2-shift operation. At the end of the year, the new blood meal equipment in the by-products plant was taken over for running maintenance and the installation of the bone meal equipment and subsequent contractor's trials were nearing completion.

8.46 Cheung Sha Wan Abattoir operated continuously and satisfactorily throughout the year. One ammonia condenser was re-tubed after eight years of service.

Air-Conditioning and Refrigeration Plant Sections

8.47 These Sections maintain all air-conditioning and refrigeration plants including associated water pumps and chlorination equipment. At the end of the year, 210 attended and automatic air-conditioning and refrigeration plants totalling 40,082 KW were in operation. A further 174 air-conditioning plants (33,914 KW), 61 refrigeration plants (1,187 KW), 367 chilled water and sea-water pumps (5,259 KW) and 24 sets of chlorination equipment (32.16 Kg/Hr.) were jointly maintained by these and other sections of the Office. In addition, 12 air-conditioning and refrigeration plants (771 KW) installed on outlying islands were maintained on behalf of these sections by the Electrical (Refrigerator and Room Cooler) Section, Hong Kong.

Hong Kong International Airport Section

8.48 This Section maintains all the electrical, mechanical and air-conditioning systems as well as the runway and landing approach lights, sub-station equipment, air navigation beacons, baggage conveyor systems and passenger aerobridges at the International Airport. All plant and equipment was maintained throughout the year without major breakdown. In addition to routine maintenance and overhaul of plant and equipment, this Section carried out work connected with the airport development on behalf of the Design and Projects Division.
