equipment.
8.33 The Site Maintenance Sub-Sections are responsible for on-site maintenance and overhaul of electrical equipment, the preventive maintenance of room coolers and refrigerators and the inspection of contract-maintained room coolers.
8.34 The Electrical Workshop Sub-Sections are responsible for the overhaul of electrical appliances and equipment, the testing of new equipment and the repair rewinding of electric motors and for attending fault calls in respect of room coolers, refrigerators and electrical equipment.
8.35 The Traffic Light and Installation Sub-Sections are responsible for the installation, modification, maintenance and repair of traffic light signals and traffic aids, the installation of new equipment and also temporary lighting. In addition, a night patrol of traffic lights and aids is provided.
8.36 These Sub-Sections also carried out work at various locations for the Design and Projects Division.
Vehicle and Ancillaries Sections
8.37 These Sections, each under a Section Manager of Technical Superintendent Grade, are divided into units, each being responsible for aspects of the maintenance of vehicles and support for other Sections where setting up a separate facility for that Section is uneconomical. The various shops undertake the inspection, servicing and repair of Government's vehicle fleet, including motor cycles and bicycles. The Sub-Assembly Shop reconditions and tests engines removed from vehicles, and rebuilds gearboxes, clutches, axles, steering boxes, suspension and brake component assemblies. Body Sheet Metal and Carpenters Shops are very fully engaged on the construction and repair of bodywork. Due to the work load, however, it has been necessary to have certain body repairs carried out under contract during the year. The Upholstery Shops repair vehicle upholstery, including the re-lining of roofs and door panels and also make canvas canopies, carpets, rubber seats and seat covers for vehicles. Tyres and tubes are repaired, electrical systems are maintained and rewired and batteries are serviced in other subsidiary shops. The Paint Shop in the Caroline Hill Workshops not only deals with complete vehicle respraying but also the painting of electrical appliances and other miscellaneous items, although it has been necessary to have some of the vehicle respraying work carried out under contract.
In Kowloon, the lack of workshop space necessitates not only all whole vehicle respraying but also all major vehicle body repairs being carried out under contract. The cost of such work by contract continues to rise, but in the circumstances of current Workshops congestion, this additional cost has to be accepted. In Kowloon, space is available for only domestic equipment to be painted and small re-touching jobs to be carried out on vehicles.
Mechanical Plant Sections
8.38 These Sections, in Hong Kong and Kowloon, each under a Section Manager of Technical Superintendent Grade, are divided into three Sub-Sections. As with the Electrical Sections, there is a different work bias on each side of the harbour.
