the design of non-standard vehicle bodies, co-ordination of Government's annual vehicle requirements, contracts for vehicle bodywork construction, bodywork repair and repainting, construction of refuse handcarts and bulk containers and the supervision of such contracts. It is also responsible for the Transport Pool within the Government fleet.

During the year 223 new vehicles were received and put into service and 218 vehicles were withdrawn from service. Vehicle body construction work completed included two water tankers, two 22-seater and one 30-seater buses, two cemetery vans, two hot meal trailers, one postal delivery van, one mobile library and one mobile library despatch van, one 2-ton dual purpose lorry, three radar vans, four radio despatch vans, six aluminium alloy refuse handcarts, fifteen Evans, type EB15, Refuse Collector replacement bodies and eighteen metal canopies for various classes of vehicle. All new vehicles were treated with anti-rust preservative. Forty-five vehicles were modified and fifty-nine refuse bins were fabricated. The bodies of two hundred and twelve vehicles were repainted and/or repaired.
Transport Pool
8.28
The Transport Supervisor, in charge of the Government Transport Pool, is responsible for the registration, allocation and operation of all Government vehicles, including bicycles, and the keeping of records in respect of these. He is also responsible for the testing and recruitment of Government drivers, their records and the issue of Government Driving Permits. In addition he provides tuition to Government officers who are required to be motor vehicle drivers and motor cycle or scooter riders.

During the period under review the 151 vehicles of the Pool made 26,930 trips. A total of 9,252 commercial vehicles was hired to supplement Pool Transport. Of 820 drivers, including Government officers, who were tested 624 passed and 65 drivers were engaged. Government vehicles of all Departments were involved in 1,278 traffic accidents.
WORKSHOPS AND MAINTENANCE SUB-DIVISION

This Sub-Division consists of two main workshops located at Caroline Hill Road, Hong Kong and Sung Wong Toi Road, Kowloon together with Vehicle Service Stations at Kennedy Town, Lantao Island, Lai Chi Kok and Fan Gardens. In addition to the maintenance of the Government's vehicle fleet, Sections of this Sub-Division regularly inspect and maintain almost all the varied electrical and mechanical equipment used by Government.
Electrical, Refrigerator and Room Cooler Sections
8.31
These Sections, in Hong Kong and Kowloon, each under a Section Manager of Technical Superintendent Grade, are divided into four sub-sections. The Sections are not identical as there is a different bias to certain functions on either side of the harbour but the sub-divisions are roughly as outlined below.
8.32 The Room Cooler and Refrigerator Workshops are responsible for the delivery and collection of refrigerators and other items of domestic electrical appliances and equipment, the overhaul and major repair of room coolers and refrigerators and the testing of new items of such types of
