Officers recruited in the Surveying Assistant grades, although not pupils, may, subject to holding the necessary academic qualifications, take professional examinations. In the 1976 Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors examinations, three Surveying Assistants (Estate) passed the Part I examination, and six Student Estate Surveyors and one Surveying Assistant (Estate) passed the Part II examination.

During the year, one Basic Survey Training course was conducted, attended by ten Surveying Assistants (Land) and two Basic Cartographic Training courses were conducted for 20 Cartographic Assistants from this office and 13 Cartographic Assistants from the New Territories Administration. Five refresher courses were conducted for serving Surveying Assistants (Land & Engineering) and one elementary Survey Training Course for Surveying Assistants (Estate). All Surveying and Cartographic Assistants Rank III are required to pass a departmental promotion examination before gaining promotion to Rank II. During the year results were as follows:-

Overseas Training

In the United Kingdom, two Surveying Assistants (Land) were attending a three-year B.Sc. course in Land Surveying at the North East London Polytechnic, two Surveying Assistants (Engineering) and one Surveying Assistant (Land) were attending the one-year Army Survey Course at the School of Military Survey, two Student Estate Surveyors were attending a six-month polytechnic course followed by a six-month attachment to Messrs. Gerald Eve & Co. and one Estate Surveyor was on a nine-month attachment to the same firm.

One Cartographic Assistant (Photo) was sent to Australia to undertake a four-month attachment to the Division of National Mapping of the Department of National Resources in Canberra.
Welfare

The Crown Lands and Survey Office Social Club continued its activities throughout the year. These included a Christmas party held at the Office, a picnic to Wu Kai Sha Youth Village and inter-Office sports contests.
