Cartography

General

7.58

This work-group is responsible for producing the final graphic presentation of the photogrammetric, cadastral and mapping activities of the Branch.

7.59 The products of the group are very varied, ranging from simple cadastral plans to multicolour topographical maps and special purpose (thematic) maps for other Government Departments.

7.60

Techniques and materials are continually being up-dated and there is a steady improvement in the utility and aesthetic appearance of maps and plans produced.

7.61

During the year one Cartographic Assistant I (Photo) spent four months on attachments to various mapping agencies in Australia.

Compilations

7.62

The 1:2500 metric series, which is produced mainly as a base plan for the Town Planning Office, was completed.

7.63 The 1:7500 dual language street map series which includes the larger urban areas of the New Territories was also completed. Both these and the 1:5000 series are maintained on cyclic revision. The section was depleted in strength to enable secondments to be made to the New Territories Development Department so no new work was commenced during the year.

Topographic Maps

7.64 The 1:20 000 series covering the whole of Hong Kong in 15 sheets is virtually completed. Only two of the three sheets being prepared by the Director of Military Surveys (U.K.) remain and these are both in final stages ready for printing.

7.65 Revision and some redesigning is now in progress, coupled with the joint production of some 50 1:10 000 sheets which will be produced in monochrome version over the next few years, to replace the Imperial L882 series.

7.66

The de-luxe edition of the 1:50 000 (HM50CL) maps continued to be in great demand. A revised Edition 3 was printed during the year.

Other Maps

7.67

The Official Guide Map and the Countryside Series remain in great demand and reprints of a new edition of each were produced during the year.
