FEMALE OF SPECIES IS DEADLY

LOIS TERRY'S MOST AMAZING RECORD IN SOFTBALL HISTORY

ONE OF THE GAME'S FINEST

ALL-ROUNDERS

(By HARRY CULVER)

That bard who first called public attention to the premises that the female of the species is more deadly than the male, should have been introduced to Lois Terry, the terror of the soft- ball diamonds. He could easily have made it even more em- phatic concerning the deadliness of the southpaw female of the species!

Four years ago, LaBelle Terry, then a platinum blonde, burst upon feminine softball like a bombshell. The game, was just undergoing transition from the bloomer girl variety of ball to A snappy, short-pantied brand that was beginning to bring in the fans in droves, and Terry was just the gal who gave the sport its biggest impetus.

She was practically unbeat- able, with by far the fastest de- livery of any of the girl twirlers, and a heck of a lot faster than many of the men twirlers of that early vintage. Her team, the original Chappellés, rode to the Southern California cham- pionship behind the Terry's mighty south-paw arm.

Needless to say, she keeps a scrap-book of her activity. The other day a friend of hers, a rabid Terry fan, pored through the ac- cumulation and came out with the information that Lois has in her four-year apan, pitched no less than 172 full games.

Of these she has won 136 and lost only 36-a four-year record that any male pitcher would give his shirt for.

proof of that contention is the fact that one night she clouted two balls over the right field fence at Fairfax Field, a feat unmatched by any girl batter, and a record equalled by few of the male hitters.

Her four-year batting average is over 400. She takes a natural swing, leaning into the pitch like
