Newman Gets 161,
Davis 0
Tom Newman won the fifth frame in tho. Gold Cup, snooker heat against Joe Davis at Thurston's, London, on October 28 by 1610. Refereo Char- les Chambers could not remember having marked up a score like that in all his experience.
But it was Joe Davis who really took the lionours.. The champion is conceding 'Newman 40' points in each frame, and he won four of the frames in the early session to increase his lead to 20-25.
Newman was in brilliant form in that fifth frame. He made a break- of 68, and might have got a hundred but he missed a brown. Davis for once simply had no sort of look in. And the spectators gave Tom a' real "hand" when the frame finished.
· Interval scores (Davis first) :-98— 66, 49–106, 91—87, 91–63, 0161, 112-59. Davis led 29-25.
י
Each won three games in the even- ing session, when the scores (Davis first) were 80——71, 90—88, 80—75, 31-105, 76–83, 53–124. Davis leads 3228.

WHAT EVERY CULTURED HOME SHOULD HAVE!
"A high level of thought, style and scholarship is maintained, and there is hardly an article which does not impress the reader with a feeling of respect should rank with the better class of reviews the world over."
-International Affairs.
"It is packed full of literary, philosophical, and historical inter- est from cover to cover. No one who is really interested in China or who would become better acquainted with Chinese outlooks can well afford to leave this, the Tien Hsia Monthly, off his magazine list."
-The Personalist.
"Not in many a day has anything so stimulating bobbed up in China.
From every page shine forth sentences which somehow bite into the consciousness."

Corinthians' New Forwards
The Corinthians during the fort- night ending October 21 discover- ed in the North and Midlands three new forwards-L. Carney, B. Gomm, and S. Swales-who are likely to be included in their first F. A. Cup-tie on November 12. 8. Swales, who has ap peared in Bradford City's team, assist- ed the Northern Counties against the Southern Counties at Dulwich · last week. He is a useful outside-left, not ' so clever in ball control as J. Lomas, the Oxford University winger, but is more strongly built than the Oxford Blue, and for this reason he may be preferred to Lomas for -the Corinthians Cup eleven.
L., Carney, of Liverpool University, is a clever inside-right, while B. Gomm, of Birmingham University, on his dis- play at Oxford last week, is one of the most promising centre-forwards the Corinthians have found of recent
years, Those now acquisitions are ex- pected to give the Corinthians a realiy strong forward line in the Cup this year to support a sound defence com- posed of A. Woolcock, G. Strasser, W. Whewell or J. Allen, D. Pettitt, J.-Sur- cliffe, and K. Caldwell.
Cambridge Soccer Prospects
Although F. Templar, the Cambridge captain, has not so many clever new young players to fill the vacancies as his Oxford rival, H. Seaford, he looks like rebuilding a strong Cambridgo eleven more quickly than Oxford do. For the vacancy at leftback, the new Cambridge leader has a fine player in P. Rhodes, from Charterhouse, At centre-half and left-half back, D. Rowe and G. Willatt are to be given a. thorough trial while the new out- side right, L. Hollins, on the form he has shown, has a good chance of gain- ing his Blue In C Shaw, R. Reddy, and J. Lyon Cambridge have thres Very good, new goalkeepers, A. Shirreft, of Dulwich, College, is a pro- mising inside-right, and G. de Piro of Repton, a speedy
