O.B.A. LADIES CONSTITUTE BIGGEST MENACE TO "Y" St. Andrew's Can Improve Attack: The Season's Fixtures

A

(By “STICKS”)

LL being well Ladies' hockey-the Caer Clark and Brawn Cup Leagues-will make an official start next Saturday with a programme of six matches, two senior and four juniors, and, if the standard of hockey served up in recent trial games serve as any indication of form, we are in for a feast of entertaining matches in both divisions.

Most of the Caer Clark Cup teams have. by now some idea as to the composition of their teams, but the juniors are still uncertain of their lineups.

of the Caer Clark Cup League, have a difficult sea- son ahead of them for their opponents, in most cases, have been adequately streng- thened by newcomers, while "Y" have still to rely upon the old brigade "to bring. home the bacon.”

The champions have more or less decided upon their team and are for- tunate to be able to fill the important position between the sticks without calling upon new talent. Mrs. Read. although essentially a thrustful cen- tre-forward, will be seen in goal and has lost none of her daring nor accur- acy with her stick. She should make more than a worthy successor to Miss J. Lakeman.

"Y" ATTACK

The "Y" attack is certain to be Mrs. O. Burnett, Mrs. Williams, who gave a very impressive performance against Hong Kong Ladies last Saturday, Miss V. Bradbury, Miss M. Smith and Miss M. Westcott, but their intermediate line is still unsettled.

At the moment the intermediate trio are Mrs. Stone, a very impressive new- comer at right-half, Miss Muriel

McCaw and Miss R. Dairne.

“REVIEWER'S" SPORTS COMMENTARY

Suggestion To Ladies' Hockey Coaches

I would like to make a suggestion on coaching in ladies' hockey and that is that Club conches' make it a point of concentrating on junior teams as well as seniors.

I know this was not the case last season when, with the knowledge that Central British School were almost assured of the Brawn Cup title, coaches made it a point of concen- trating on their senior teams alone, leaving the juniors to get along as well as they could.

After all, if Ladies' hockey is. to maintain its place as an outstanding sport in the Colony, the root or base of the sport, the nursery, must be well and truly cared for and not neglected. At the moment, or to be exact, the best talent in recent seasons has emanated from the school teams and not from Club teams!

Britain's Davis Cup Decline

G. P. Hughes, one of the British lawn tennis team which held the Davis Club for four years, has come back United from a playing tour in the States convinced that it will be some years before Britain will be serious challengers again for the trophy.

"There is no getting away from the fact that American and Australian tennis is head and shoulders anything in this country" said Hughes on arrival with E. J. Filby and R. A. Shayes in the Queen Mary at Ply- mouth.

Oldfield On Australia's Needs

Oldfield said Australia was sadly in need of a slow bowler to provide a foil for O'Reilly. Neither Fleetwood-Smith nor Ward were able to do this, and the absence of Grimmett was very much felt on the tour. Even on "concrete" wickets Grimmett would have been invaluable, on account of his ability to make the ball "do things" in air. Australia, Oldfield added, also neeeded a fast bowler with the neces- sary stamina to enable him to stand up to five test matches. Another good Wai-opening batsman was wanted, and the position of wicket-keeper was uncer- tain. Neither Barnett nor Walker had come up to expectations behind. the stumps.
