The three new Senior Information Officer posts were created to deal specifically with the production of publications on the department's work; publicity promotion, including the staging of exhibitions, and production of feature articles for use both locally and overseas. The Information Officer post was created to assist with the growing volume of news and press liaison work handled by the Unit, and the Assistant Information Officer post became necessary to provide photographic support for the work of the Unit. The official creation of the posts - which had been filled by the use of temporary staff since the reorganisation of the Unit in late 1975 - enabled recruitment to be carried out, and all the posts were filled during the year.
2.47
In the period under review the Unit issued 231 press releases, compared with 98 in the previous year, and produced 17 major feature articles, all of which were widely used both locally and in major overseas publications.

The Unit also handled an increasing number of inquiries from the media, on average receiving some 20 sets of multiple press questions each day.
2.49 Four major publications were produced. They were full-colour booklets on each of the new towns at Sha Tin, Tuen Mun and Tsuen Wan and "A Guide to Crown Land Transactions", which appeared in separate English and Chinese editions. In addition, a series of pamphlets, some of them bilingual, were produced, and drafting began on a wide range of other publications.

The introduction of the Department's new symbol in a wide range of contexts, from site publicity to stationery, was also well under way by the end of the year.

During this, the second full operational year, a number of assignments have been undertaken in fulfilment of this objective. Once again however, it was necessary to limit the scope of activities and to concentrate upon those areas in which an urgent operational need could be demonstrated. Typical of such assignments was the continuation of the work dealing with the manual procedures associated with the computerisation of the Architectural Office's Maintenance Contractors' Bills. This project was successfully implemented during the year and the monitoring of results has indicated that the expected annual savings of $3,670,000 will be achieved. Other studies referred to in last year's Report were also satisfactorily concluded.
