Chinese Announce

Withdrawal From Tehan

Nanchang, To-day. The Chinese military authorities announce the

abandonment of Tehan. The terse military communique, released late last night, states that during the seventy-two hours' defence of Tehan, Chinese forces have accounted for at least two full Japanese regi- ments, and they were ordered to withdraw, ac- cording to plan, after the original objective of the high command had been attained.

Details of the heroic defence of 1 Tehan by Chinese troops have be- gun filtering through from the front. For three sleepless days and nights, the gallant defenders were holding a city, literally an in- ferno of fire and smoke, of blast- ing powers and choking gas.

μ

The Tennant · ́ ́ ́Chinese ́ ́ troops, after having written another flam- ing chapter in the bravery of Chinese soldiery, left the burning and smouldering city without -- single house standing and a ma- chine-gun post intact.

The streets, as the Chinese sold- iers left them, were littered with.
