Definite confirmation of the report that a Japanese mechanised unit has appeared at a point with- in 15 miles of Canton, north-east of the city, comes this morning from unimpeachable sources, and severe fighting along the outer ring of Canton's defences may be expected within the next 24 hours.

As far as can be gathered, the detachment is not in

sufficient strength to be able to press its excur sion further, but foreign circles here regard the situation, from the Cantonese viewpoint, as serious.
