The tourists have won no fewer than seventeen out of their twenty-three matches, and no other touring team has done that before in the Union during the last forty years. Its re- below in comparison with other tour cord speaks for itself, and is given ing teams:

Referee:

The tourists proved themselves the most popular band of overseas sports- men to visit the Union because they played open Rugby, irrespective of whether they won or lost.. Early in

the tour Sam Walker, the genial Irishman who captained the side, an- nounced that the team would always play open Rugby because they knew no other game, and they carried out their promise.

They scored more points than any other touring side. has ever done in South Africa, but the merit of their play had its demerits. An playing the open game they left openings, and had. more points scored. against them than any other team that has visited the Union.

Their enterprising play won warm. tributes from critics all over the Unión, however, as it proved an in- centive to the South Africans to keep the game open, and some spectacular matches resulted.

In the early part of the tour F. J. Reynolds (England) won the admira- tion of the critics by his beautiful running' with the ball, and there was an impression that he was the finest fly-half seen in the Union for many vears. Fast off the mark, with per- fect hands and a natural body swerve which was most deceptive to his op- ponents, Reynolds made splendid openings, but he either ran too far away from his support or passed badly. Injuries also affected. him, and he faded out in the second half of the tour.

The third Rugby Test is being talk- ed about as the most thrilling Rugby match ever seen in the Union, and in many respects, having regard to the standing of South African Rugby to- day, it was the most thrilling victory any British. team has scored in the Dominions. Altogether the tourists with their fine sporting methods, their pleasant personalities off the field and, finally, their magnificent display in the final test match, have left behind them a glowing impression of British Rueby.

They have shown that it does not necessarily need 'a team of outstand» · ing individuals to make a fine side providing there are fifteen good play- ers to weld together with the ideal of playing for their side, And that is the best tribute that can be paid to the management of the team and the twenty-nine players in the side.
