Chinese shore-batteries at Nan- tau, on the Kowloon-Canton bor- der, were instrumental in prevent- ing a Japanese armed launch from attacking a Chinese junk on Sa- turday.

The junk which was returning to Hong Kong, was signalled by the launch to stop when nearing Nantau. The master of the junk decided to ignore the signal and sailed full speed ahead making for the shore.

As both boats got nearer to the shore, the launch gradually over- taking the junk, Chinese machine- gun batteries suddenly opened fire on the Japanese launch, forcing the launch to beat a hasty retreat.

The master of the junk return- ed to the Colony yesterday and made this report to the Hong Kong Fishermen's Union. He also stated that on the way to Hong Kong ke saw over a score of derelict junks which had been burned by the Ja- panese.

Shanghai, To-day. Gangsters' guns barked outside the Settlement boundary at 8.50 yesterday evening when two men were killed. The Japanese are-car- rying out investigations.

It is believed that rival gangs in the Tatao protected gambling resort wore warring,

Shots were plainly heard in the western district of Shanghai. This was the only disturbance, on the eve of the "Double-Tenth" anniver- sary of the Chinese Republic's

birth.

Police in the Concession and the Settlement are doing extra duty assisted by foreign military to pre- vent an outbreak of terrorism to- day.

Chinese flag-shops are doing a rushing business.

Large Japanese tanks and motor- cycles with machine-guns and lor- ries full of soldiers have been seen patrolling the Hongkew streets.---- Reuter.
