DESERT CHIEF Hot Favourite

OCTOBER H'CAP MAIN EVENT TO-MORROW

S. W. Pan & P. P. Botelho Making Re-Appearance DAILY DOUBLE" WILL BE PROBLEM

(By "RAPIER")

Commencing to-morrow, the Eighth Extra Race Meeting, un- der the auspices of the Hong Kong Jockey Club, will be resumed on Monday, the occasion being the "Double Tenth" holiday.

It is just possible that, due to the heavy rain which fell during| the course of the week, the track will be on the soft side, in which event it will be necessary to bear in mind the ponies that have done The notes which well in meetings under similar circumstances. follow were compiled under the presumption that rain would not seriously affect the track.

I believe that Messrs. S. W. Pan and P. P. Botelho will be riding to-morrow. The former has had riding experience in Hankow and was last here in 1934. Mr. Botelho has not donned colours for quite a while, due to an injury he sus- tained some time ago. He has now fully recovered from the effects of that injury, and his reappearance will be welcomed by the racing public.

This is the first leg of the Daily Double, and, with so many ponies among the Australian "C" Glass en- is tered, a rather difficult problem presented to spot the ultimate winner, A Great Time, having recently been be demoted from "B" Class, will carrying top weight of 165 lbs, and despite the fact that it will be ridden by Mr. Needa, I doubt whether it can win..

I rather like Violet Queen, which will again be ridden by Mr. Raymond, although it has been panalised 8 lbs. after winning the Gosford Handicap at the last Meeting over six furlongs. It is just possible that the distance may be a little too long, but I think the pony can manage it.

Laughing Girl was at regarded as a sprinter, but it developed into a pony with stamina, and I expect it to give King's Lead a good run. The best that Scenic View can do is to take third place, but the pony is fit and a win here is not out of the question. The race should resolve into a struggle be tween these three ponies, with Tyne ridden by Mr. L. B. Chao as capable of creating an upset.

Those who succeed in making the right connection in the first leg of the "Daily Double" will find it just as dif- the ficult to nominate the winner in second leg, this race, which will be contested by the second batch of "C" Class China ponies.

The winner will probably come from one of the following:-

Rose Evelyn (Mr. Encarnacao)

Wild Cat (Mr. Pih)

Soldier of China (Mr. P. P. Botelho).
