During the last few months some increase in the activity of Ve- suvius has been noted, small quantities of ash and lava being thrown out from the central cone at intervals of a few minutes. On a re- cent occasion a group of three Britishers accompanied by a guide were viewing the volcano from inside the main crater and owing to a fav ourable, wind direction were able to approach right up to the foot of the central cone. Almost at the moment of their arrival at this point a heavy explosion of fumes and red hot lava took place, a great column of smoke and ash being shot into the air several hundred feet above the mouth of the cone, spreading out as it fell and covering the whole of the sides of the cone with a glowing and smoking re fuse. This picture was taken by the photographer as the first of the semi-molten lava was falling, after which he found it necessary to make a harried retreat to avoid the large lumps of flaming rock which came pounding down. Large lumps fell around the party and remained red-hot for a considerable, time before cooling down the dirty grey-black tone, which with vivid yellow patches of sulphur, make up the scenery of this remarkable spot. BALLET OF VEGETABLES. The most curious and enterpris- ing methods ever used in England to popularise science are being employed in making a Gaumont-British documentary film at Shep- herd's Bush dealing with nutrition. The chief feature of the film is a vegetable ballet and in the ballet each vegetable is in charge of a vitamin policeman". Forty girls dressed as various vegetables are in the ballet.
