There was last night a feeling that the danger of
war was nearer than at any time since 1914. A certain amount of relief created by Hitler's speech was dispelled by the developments. The Sudeten ultimatum has caused a deep in pres- sion. It is considered that it would be a definite derogation of sovereignty for Czecho-Slovakia to agree to the demand for a plebiscite or to ac- cede to the ultimatum.
It is also thought that the Sudetens would not take
such a decision without Hitler's approval.
It is taken for granted that France will stand by the Prague Government.
