The heavy commitment of the Division on works associated with the High Island project continued throughout the current year. The expenditure this year was $51,500,000 excluding the civil works for the de-salting project.

Shortage of staff, arising from Government's policy of imposing restrictions on recruitment, presented considerable difficulties in meeting the Division's workload.

11.30 Appendix BB gives details of works under construction and works completed during the year.

Hong Kong Island

11.31 Work for the improvement of salt water supply to Chai Wan was completed. Work for the additional fresh water service reservoir for the Pok Fu Lam area was in hand and tenders for extending the Pok Fu Lam fresh water distribution system and the Central District salt water distribution system were invited.

Kowloon and New Territories

11.32 Construction works for the extension of fresh water and salt water supplies to the New Kowloon East high level areas continued as scheduled.

11.33 Construction of a new service reservoir at Sheung Shui continued, while the laying of the associated pipelines was completed.

11.34 Works on the Western Tunnels and Intakes associated with the High Island Water Scheme, including the laying of the twin 60" diameter water mains through the Second Lion Rock Tunnel were completed. Construction of the lowland pumping stations at Wu Kai Tau, Tai Shui Hang, Ho Chung and Long Keng, as well as the 92,600 cubic metres Lion Rock Service Reservoir was in progress.

11.35 The civil engineering works for extending the daily output of Sha Tin Treatment Works from 795,550 cubic metres to 1,091,040 cubic metres were completed and erection of the additional treatment plant was nearing completion.

11.36 Construction of a new 29,549 cubic metres service reservoir for supplying water to Sha Tin New Town commenced. Tender documents for laying of the associated pipelines were finalized.

11.37 Design of a new 9,092 cubic metres service reservoir and pipeline system to provide water supply to Tai Po Industrial Estate Development was in hand.

11.38 Tenders for the laying of principal trunk and distribution mains for supplying water to Tsing Yi were invited.
