11.09 Systematic waste detection continued throughout the year. Quarterly checks were carried out in 318 fresh water areas and annual checks in the 91 salt water areas. A number of major leaks were discovered. Repairs resulted in an estimated daily saving of more than 36,368 cubic metres of water.

Mass Transit Works Sub-Division

11.10 In May the creation of a specialist mains unit to deal with the realignment and replacement of mains and related works arising from the construction of the Mass Transit Railway was approved. The staffing of the unit was substantially completed by the end of the year.

Diversionary works, involving some 3.2 km. of mains, were carried out in advance of the main contract work for the Mass Transit Railway. Planning of measures to be taken during the construction stages was in progress and work commenced at a number of locations.

House Service Sub-Division

11.11 The number of meters installed during the year was 44,072, bringing the total number of metered services to 697,225.

11.12 In the early part of the year efforts were concentrated on prosecutions in connection with offences under the Waterworks Ordinance, in particular for illegal draw off. The need was established and posts created for the establishment of a separate prosecution unit.

General

11.13 The Division comprises a Headworks Sub-Division, responsible for the maintenance and operation of storage reservoirs, intakes, filter stations, trunk mains and service reservoirs, and an Operations Sub-Division, responsible for monitoring the output and adequacy of pumping stations, treatment works, service reservoirs and other facilities, for the collection and processing of hydrological data for design and record purposes, and for the development of rules for the operation of the multi-reservoir system.
