GENERAL

The Waterworks Office is responsible for all aspects of water supply and distribution carried out by Government. The work is divided among eight divisions and four units each with specific responsibilities as shown on the operation and organisation chart. Consulting engineers are appointed to carry out planning feasibility studies and construction of new works which require specialist knowledge or at times when the resources of the Office are fully extended. A list of projects undertaken by consultants is given at Appendix BB. New works and a large proportion of the maintenance work are carried out by contract but the operation of supply, the distribution of water and maintenance of meters and machinery is done by Waterworks staff.

11.02 A favourable water storage position and above average rainfall enabled a 24-hour supply to be maintained throughout the year.

11.03 Work on the 181,840 cubic metres per day single purpose de salting plant continued, four units satisfactorily completing their tests on completion. The plant was officially inaugurated by H.E. the Governor on 15th October 1975. The 273 cubic metres capacity High Island reservoir progressed satisfactorily, the problem of seepage at the east sea cofferdam having been successfully overcome. The tunnel system was completed and work on the lowland pumping stations progressed generally satisfactorily.

11.04

Appendix BB gives details of works under construction and works completed during the year.

11.05 The Office is represented on various committees and boards including:
