Out of a total of 15 cordons and screenlines in Hong Kong, 14 experienced an increase in average daily traffic over the preceding year. The only one which showed a slight drop in average daily traffic was the north-south screenline between San Po Kong and Kowloon City.

The Area Traffic Control Unit is responsible for the implementation and subsequent operation of the West Kowloon Area Traffic Control system.

The system when installed will allow central control and co-ordination by computer of some 85 sets of traffic light signals on the heavily trafficked roads in West Kowloon. This will give the benefits of

(a) Timings of the traffic signals being adjusted to optimise traffic flow.
(b) Automatic fault identification.
(c) A continuous record of traffic movements in the controlled area, enabling the timing plans to be changed to accommodate fluctuation in traffic flows.
(d) Priority routes for fire appliances.
The installation of the data transmission cable network, new traffic signals controllers and detectors, and the fitting out of the computer accommodation was completed. Due to problems experienced by the main contractor on the development of the computer programmes, the system will not be fully operational till February or March 1977.

The traffic diversions associated with the Mass Transit Railway construction necessitated changes to both the traffic signal controllers and the traffic control plans. Although considerable extra work was involved, such changes did not pose any major problems.
