ROYAL SCOTS' TRIUMPH IN

50 YARDS DASH

(By "CRAWL”);

The second day's swimming in the Hong Kong Area (Army) Individual Swimming Championships, in the V.R.C. pool, yesterday, afternoon, provided several close finishes and one strange coincid- ence Lieut. J. M. Calvert clocking 6 mins. 11 secs. in the final of the quarter-mile, which was four-fifths of a second better than his time recorded in the heats on Tuesday!

L/Bdr. Norman recorded two successes and came to within an inch of securing a third. He won the 100 Yards Breast-stroke and Back-stroke Championships fairly easily, and was only just beaten by Pte. Nicholls, in the Diving Final.

In the 440 Yards Final Lieut.

of the Colony title, in the 100 Yards Back-stroke event, but he' has only just recovered from a bout of influenza and was in no condition to swim.

The most improved swimmer, on view yesterday was A. K, Rumjahn, who won the first heat of the back- stroke event with comparative ease in 74 2-5 secs., and it was very obvious that he had plenty in reserve.

DIRECT CONTRAST

In direct contrast, Wilfred Law- rence, the 1985 holder, was pushed all the way by Chan Kai-him and Lau Yiu-ting, both of whom were only a fraction off. Lawrence's time was -2 2-5 seca, better than that of Rumjahn's, but he will have to produce much better form to regain the title he once held.
