The planning, design and improvement of bus stops, bays, termini, public light bus stands and other facilities continued throughout the year either independently or as part of road improvement schemes.
9.68 Three new bus termini were brought into operation on the Mainland and two were planned on Hong Kong Island to serve the Hing Wah Estate and Wah Fu Estate Extension.

Expansion of bus services continued. This included the introduction of 5 new bus routes on the Island and 15 on the Mainland.

For public light buses, a new temporary terminus at Hung Hom in Kowloon was brought into use and 3 existing stands on Hong Kong Island were extended.

On Hong Kong Island, 'bus only' lanes were introduced in the section of Pottinger Street between Des Voeux Road Central and Connaught Road Central daily for the period from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m.. In Kowloon, similar arrangements were introduced in part of Nathan Road and Shanghai Street as a result of traffic diversions for Mass Transit works.

Traffic diversions in connection with the Mass Transit construction in the West Kowloon area and in the Central District of Hong Kong Island were effected.

The Traffic Management Group held regular meetings to discuss, modify and implement the various traffic management schemes planned for maintaining, as far as possible, the movement of all road users during the construction of the Mass Transit Railway.
9.74 Tenders for Mass Transit contracts in Central District on Hong Kong Island and the whole of Nathan Road in Kowloon were examined to assess the implications of the proposed methods of construction upon traffic.
Pedestrian Facilities

There was a nett increase of 6 zebra crossings on the Island and 9 on the Mainland.

Work continued for the phasing out of existing stud crossings and their replacement with signal controlled crossings or zebra crossings where warranted.

In Kowloon, four footbridges across Ferry Street, Lung Cheung Road, Kwun Tong Road and Boundary Street were completed. Two pedestrian subways across Kowloon Park Drive and Kwun Tong Road were also opened for use.
