9.33 Although the superstructure of the elevated road linking Kwun Tong with the Airport Tunnel is not yet required, design work proceeded in order to enable some of the foundations to be provided in conjunction with the Mass Transit Railway works, because their subsequent construction would be difficult or impossible.

9.34 A design for a flyover across Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan, connecting Texaco Road with North Tsuen Wan, was under preparation, and the design for a flyover across Kwai Chung Road linking Lai King Road with Lower Kwai Chung was completed.

9.35 Work has proceeded on designs for the Hill Road flyover linking Pok Fu Lam Road with Connaught Road, the viaduct between Boundary Street and Cheung Sha Wan Road, and the Waterloo Road Cornwall Street flyover.

9.36 Designs have been prepared for footbridges crossing Queen's Road East at Wah Yan College, and Lai Chi Kok Road at Pei Ho Street, utilising steel from the dismantled temporary flyover across Waterloo Road. Work on a design for a concrete footbridge across Castle Peak Road in Tsuen Wan at Chung On Street was nearing completion.

9.37 The Division continued the investigation into the strength of existing bridges. Cedric Bridge on Castle Peak Road was found to be seriously under strength, and a replacement was being designed. Several other weak bridges were identified, and arrangements to strengthen or replace them were being prepared.

These included the Hong Kong Island Eastern Corridor, Lei Yue Mun Gap Bridge, Tai Hang Road Flyover and Robinson Road/Old Peak Road/Glenealy Junction Improvements. Design works for Canal Road Flyover Extension and the Western approach to the Airport tunnel were completed while those on Aberdeen Tunnel and the West Kowloon Corridor from Yau Ma Tei to Lai Chi Kok continued.
