Road Works in Kowloon

Although the general financial recession delayed the start of new projects, good progress was maintained on those major roadworks on which construction had commenced. Work on the re-entered contract for the elevated road from Prince Edward Road over Nathan Road to Lai Chi Kok Road was completed in December, 1975 and the elevated road was opened to traffic in January, 1976.

Good progress was also maintained on contracts associated with the primary distributor road on the western side of the Kowloon Peninsula. Kowloon Park Drive (Canton Road Duplication) was completed well ahead of schedule and opened to traffic in October, 1975. The contract for the Eastern section of the elevated road from Gascoigne Road to Tong Mi Road was substantially completed in October, 1975. Foundation work on the Western section was well advanced and a contract was let for the superstructure in December, 1975. Progress on the latter is up to schedule.

9.24 A contract was let for Salisbury Road Extension which will provide a link from Salisbury Road to the new Austin Road Extension, relieve traffic conditions in Chatham Road, and give access to the future East Tsim Sha Tsui Development Area. Other major works started during the year included the Airport Tunnel Road from Kowloon Bay reclamation to Kwun Tong, Lung Cheung Road Reconstruction and Ching Cheung Road Reconstruction. Progress on contracts associated with the Mass Transit Railway work in Kwun Tong was well up to schedule. The contracts comprised pre-diversion works at Kwun Tong and Ngau Tau Kok Stations, and Wai Yip Street Extension from King Yip Street to Cha Kwo Ling Road, which on completion will provide a diversion route for traffic to and from the Lam Tin, Yau Tong and Lei Yue Mun areas.

Also in connection with the construction of the Mass Transit Railway a traffic management scheme was introduced to facilitate the construction of the stations in the Central District of Hong Kong Island and in Nathan Road in Kowloon. This involved traffic diversions in the Central District, and the re-routing of many streets in the districts adjacent to Nathan Road, with the object of restricting traffic in Nathan Road to travelling only in a south-bound direction. These works commenced in January, 1976 and were almost completed by the end of March.

Detailed planning and investigation was carried out on several new projects which will be implemented in the near future.
