Units of the Kennedy Town Incineration Plant were shut down on three occasions during the year to facilitate various works being carried out. Numbers 1 and 2 Units were shut down for a period of one week at the end of May to facilitate the connection of the cold gas duct between the new 5th Unit and the existing duct. The whole plant was shut down for three weeks in July to allow modification work to the over-head cranes in connection with the plant extension. During this period, staff carried out maintenance work on the incineration units, steam turbine, ancillary equipment and hot gas duct refractories and fitted new submerged ash-conveyor troughs and main gas duct by-pass dampers fabricated earlier in the year. In September, two Units were shut down and the western chimney isolated to facilitate the fitting of a venturi nozzle at the top of the chimney. Commissioning trials on the new 5th Unit commenced in November and continued throughout the remainder of the year with occasional shut-downs to facilitate minor modifications and adjustments. Throughout the year, planned maintenance work was carried out by plant staff on the original four units.

The Lai Chi Kok Incineration Plant 'A' was shut down for four weeks early in the year for routine major overhaul, during which time refractory and insulation in the critical duct areas was renewed and the main gas by-pass duct was rebuilt. Fans and ducting, overhead cranes and hydraulic systems were completely overhauled. The steam turbine and ancillaries were overhauled, steam boilers were examined by the Government-appointed Surveyor and steam lines, valves, feed pumps and chemical pumps were overhauled. An emergency shut down of No. 4 Unit in September was necessitated by the collapse of the brickwork of the rotary kiln outlet of that Unit. Throughout the year planned maintenance work was carried out by plant staff on all four units.
