MR

EDICAL science has made such strides nowadays and the latest news is that it has dis- covered a new disease which can be ́ earmarked "for wives only." I wonder if any of my readers to- day are suffering from the.com- plaint which has only just been christened.

Its name is "suburban neuro- sis" and it is the mental state into which lonely wives get when they are marooned, day after day, in the suburbs with nothing to do.

ment for community centres. They have also decided to make grants to approved voluntary schemes for building these cen- tres.

That the disease is by no means a 1988 bugbear is shown by the report which was circulated in 1935 by the Board of Education jointly with the Ministry of Health to local authorities drawing attention to the "need for organising community cen-: tres on the new housing estates."

A London doctor suggested that the solution to the problem would be found in the establishment.of clubs where wives could meet during the day and find interest in hobbies.

The new complaint was first recognised officially last month at the inquest on 44-year-old Mrs. Elizabeth Ward, of Barnet, Eng- land, who gassed herself because the she could no longer bear loneliness of (being by herself all Beating The

"Suburban neurosis," said doctor at the inquest, "is a grave social problem. Out-patient de- partments of London hospitals are full of such cases.”

Since there should at least be one cure for every human com- plaint, it is a problem which is being attended to by, doctors, estate planners and officials in disease England, now that the

has been brought to light.

The London County Council suggests that the solution would be in the erection of more com-" munity centres and this Council which recently made an order would authorise the expenditure on lands, buildings and equip-

A "flying squad" to help ex- pectant mothers in London's 'dis- trict of Islington has just been formed and is composed of mem- bers of the staff of the Univer- sity College Hospital.`

The flying squad will be ready, day and night, and their equip- ment includes everything neces-

sary for rush operations and even blood transfusions. Travel- ling in the fast car specially kept to cope with these emergency calls will be a specialist, an as- sistant doctor and a trained

nurge.

Even in cases where a local doctor is in attendance at the bedside of the expectant mother, the flying squad of trained help- ers will attend if there is any threat of complications confinement.

Just Imagine

Anna Wickham, specimens of whose poetry have been included in several present-day collections of modern poems, has just found- ed in London a Society for the Protection of the Imagination of Women.

Perhaps Anna considers that too much of a strain is put on the imagination of the modern wife when she hears, for the fourth time in one week, from her husband that he's ""been working late at the office.”
