IN HINES' PROSECUTION

New York, To-day.

The dramatic story of "death ride" threats alleged- ly made by the "Dutch” Schultz gang in their efforts to gain control of the policy betting rac- ket, was told at the resumed trial of Mr. James J. Hines. One witnesses for the prosecution, a giant negro, Wilfred Brander, from the British West In- dies, described how a car-load of Shultz's henchmen cornered him and Fred McLaugh- lin, his partner, in a Harlem (New York's co- loured belt) Policy "Bank."

According to Brander, one of the gangsters was Abe Landau, known as "Abe the Killer" who said to McLaughlin, "You've got, to kick-in that business. You want to live, don't you?"-

After first showing defiance, McLaughlin "left town" to cape the gang's vengeance, added Brander. Reuter.

FIRST GERMAN

COMMENT ON ARMY REPORTS

Berlin, To-day.

The first semi-official comment on foreign press messages and stories regarding the German army manoeuvres was made here yester- day.

Occasion for refuting these statements was a Prague story published in London to the effect that 100,000 German troops had been stationed in the Glatz district, under the command of General von Arnim, who was reported to have received the privilege to take any action he saw fit against Czecho- slovakia.

.

Semi-officially, it is declared that this report is a perfect example of the manner in which the grotesque and ludicrous lies are fabricated. It is admitted that there is an army officer named von Arnim in Glatz, but he is the head of the Military Service Department and has no troops, at his disposal. It is, moreover, denied that troops

have been concentrated in the Glatz district.

A Swiss report that Italian troops are being concentrated on the German-Swiss Border near the town of Baden, is fitted in the same category. Trans-Ocean.
