Before the end of the year the unit commenced production but this is necessarily limited pending the recruitment and training of six operators and the installation of electronic data processing and recording equipment for the plotting machines.

7.43

The photographic section of the unit has been delayed by late delivery of equipment but the main reprographic section in Murray Building has managed to cope with the unit's requirements.

Mapping Surveys

7.44

Maps produced from surveys effected by the Branch range from detailed large scale topographical sheets used by engineers, town planners, architects etc. for engineering and building projects, to the small scale sheets used for overall planning for large areas of development.

7.45

Considerable survey effort is expended in revising large scale plans as it is essential that these be kept as up to date as possible, the graphical presentation of the data being carried out by the Cartographic Group. Brief notes on the basic mapping scales are as follows :-

1:600 and 1:1 000 scale

7.46

The whole of the area comprising Kowloon Peninsula and adjacent areas has been converted from 1:600 scale to the new metric scale of 1:1 000, and this coverage will gradually extend into the New Territories during the next 12 months.

7.47

On Hong Kong Island progress has been much slower and it will be many years before the Island is completely covered by metric scale sheets.

1:1 200 scale

7.48

A vigorous revision programme has been maintained for this scale due to the upsurge in land development projects within the New Territories. Until such time as fully metricated sheets are available, a provisional 1:1 000 scale series has been introduced by enlarging and recasting the existing 1:1 200 scale sheets.

Revision (Small Scale)

7.49

A considerable amount of major revision of 1:10 000 maps was carried out, mainly for incorporation in the new 1:20 000 metric series. There was also a good deal of revision for various other maps, undertaken in the form of final checks before printing.

Site Surveys

7.50

The total number of site surveys for Government projects remained very much the same as the previous year. Anticipating a somewhat easier financial climate in the coming year, a very considerable increase in site surveys is expected.
