Works in progress included the construction of the Yuen Long sewage screening and pumping plant, a flood control channel in Tin Sam, Sha Tin and a stormwater drain for the Au Tau departmental quarters.

New designs undertaken included the Aberdeen sewage screening plant, sewage treatment and disposal works for the Deep Water Bay and Repulse Bay districts and drainage improvement works in Ma Hang, Stanley, sewage treatment works for the initial development of the Tai Po Industrial Area and for Tuen Mun New Town, the Tsuen Wan/Kwai Chung submarine outfall, and the final stage of the Tung Chung river training works on Lantau. Planning was carried out for sewage treatment and disposal works for Chai Wan and Ap Lei Chau, extensions of stormwater drains on the Western Reclamation, reclamations in Chai Wan, Aldrich Bay and Aberdeen and the Tsuen Wan/Kwai Chung link sewer and pumping station. Planning for the diversion of existing stormwater drains and sewers along the route of the Initial System of the Mass Transit Railway was completed.
### Studies and Investigation

A preliminary study of the method of improving the water quality in the Kowloon Bay Typhoon Shelter was completed.

Investigations were carried out into the spare capacity of existing stormwater drainage systems in Hong Kong, Kowloon and major centres of the New Territories.

Monitoring of the quality of harbour waters and bottom sediments and of the bacteriological quality of waters at most of the bathing beaches in the territory was continued. The test results were processed and compiled in a data report.

The main responsibilities of this Division include the construction and maintenance of seawalls, breakwaters, public and major ferry piers, the control of public dumping, capital and maintenance dredging activities, and the feasibility study of development schemes on Hong Kong Island. The work of the Division also covers the construction and maintenance of navigation markers and beacons, marine site investigations, hydrographic surveys and underwater inspections throughout Hong Kong waters.
