Although there was a slight increase in the number of professional staff employed in the Office during the year, strength was still well below the approved establishment, there being at the end of the year 30 vacancies in the Building Surveyor/Assistant Building Surveyor grade, 19 vacancies in the Structural Engineer/Assistant Structural Engineer grade and 2 vacancies in the Engineer/Assistant Engineer grade.

The Professional Training Board, comprising a Chairman, two officers qualified as Chartered Building Surveyors and one Student Building Surveyor, continued actively to assist Student Building Surveyors in their preparations for the examinations of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors. The Board also supervised a training programme, required by the Institution's Test of Professional Competence, to ensure a balanced and broad experience within the profession, and to this end some students were seconded to the Housing Authority (Construction Branch), the Architectural Office (Minor Works Division and Building Services Branch) and the Crown Lands and Survey Office.

There are now a total of 21 Assistant Building Surveyors and Student Building Surveyors in the various stages leading to election as Professional Associates of the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors.
5.36 The Technical Training Board conducted a series of lectures for Surveying Assistants (Building) Class III following which one of the three candidates successfully passed the annual examination for upgrading to Class II.
5.37 Office veterans captured gold medals in the 60 m (men over 50) race on P.W.D. Sports Day and in the 50 m freestyle (men over 50) in the P.W.D. Swimming Gala. Office teams also won the Departmental Hockey and Sailing competitions.
