The Division also dealt with the demolition, under public tender procedure, of buildings acquired for Urban Renewal within the Pilot Scheme Area, including shoring and essential repair works to adjoining buildings. Contracts for the demolition of 46 buildings were let.

5.26

During the year 255 Works Orders were issued under the Buildings Ordinance Office Works Contract, the total expenditure being in the region of $1,000,000. The Division is responsible for apportioning and recovering costs from defaulting owners.

MASS TRANSIT DIVISION

The Division examines the Mass Transit proposals generally, operating within the terms of the Agreement between the Public Works Department and the Mass Transit Railway Corporation with the purpose of safeguarding Government and private property adjacent to railway construction and ensuring that the Buildings Ordinance is observed in property development carried out by the Mass Transit Railway Corporation.

5.28 Due to the heavy workload, an increase in staff proved necessary and in July 1975 the former Unit became a Division, the Chief Building Surveyor in charge being responsible for both Works Division and Mass Transit Division.

5.29

During the year 20 contract documents related to the construction of the railway were received from the Corporation's consultants, examined and commented upon. A total of 19 Contracts (international and local) involving approximately 100 tenders was scrutinized in first and second assessments and subsequently 18 tenders were accepted by the Corporation, the successful Contractors taking over the sites and commencing work.

5.30 Preliminary submissions of commercial and residential development schemes adjoining or over the railway route, involving 5 sites, were considered in relation to the Buildings Ordinance, the largest being a small town over the proposed Kowloon Bay Depot which it is proposed will house 25,000 people and will be provided with a suitable infrastructure and ancillary accommodation.

The Division consulted and liaised with a number of Government Departments, the Mass Transit Corporation, their Consultants and Authorised Persons and is represented on the Lands Acquisition Co-ordinating Committee, Project Liaison Group, Site Liaison Group and Traffic Management Group Committee.
