Remarkable New Microscope For Medical Research

Berlin, To-day.

THE CHINA MAIL, JULY 20, 1988.

WARNING

Again we sincerely warn the public against buying cheap sunglasses sold on non-optical or unqualided counters, The lenses should be perfectly plain but mass-produced goggles seldom are. Bumpa, streaks and bad moulding affect the eye as seriously as a wrong cheapest prescription. Our GUARANTEEABLE. Sunglasses (in attractive, fitted frame and leather case) are being sold exten- sively at $5.00 per pair.

Mr. L. G. Alves, of No. 9,

Granville Road, was fined $10 for the former offence.

After six years of arduous and unrémitting re- search, two German scientists, Doctor Ernst Ruska and Doctor B. von Borries, working at the laboratory for Electronic Optics of Siemens und Halske A.G., Berlin, and the University Medical Clinic of Charite, Berlin, have suc- ceeded in perfecting an instrument known as an ultra-ultra or electronic microscope which by, enabling linear magnifications of 30,000 to be reached by comparison with maximum of only 2,000 attainable with the most refined opti- cal microscopes known to modern science, will enable medical and physical science to explore worlds of infinite minuteness hitherto lving far beyond the range of human investigation. fined $75 and $40 for having no Scientifically expressed, this been baffled by the inability to licences. hitherto impenetrable region is discover, Identify and isolate that in size between the smallest bacteria causing certain epidemics... What the electronic microscope might ultimately prove in the hands of modern scientists is still unpredictable but there exaggeration in asserting that it will open up an entirely new era in all sciences working in realm of the microscopic, for instance, atomic chemistry and physics of the ultimate structure of matter.

The principle by which these epoch-making results achieved is the use of cathode rays in place of the light rays with the optical microscope.

But whereas with the latter magnification, produced by the use of glass or fluorite lenses, to deviate the rays of light, in the electronic microscope the cathode rays are deviated by the use of electromagnetic collars the 'whole being in a vacuum. As in dealing with objects of such infinite small- ness, adjustments of the instru ment must be almost incredibly exact, the new tool of science from the mere point of view of instru- ment-making is a triumph of tech- nical achievement. A fine of $100 was imposed on the manager of the To Keung Fac- tory, of No, 121, Woosung Street, by Mr. Q. A, A. Macfadyen for not registering the factory.
