"For reasons of prestige alone. the Japanese must attempt to take Hankow," declared Marshal Chiang Kai-shek in an interview with the correspondent of the "Daily Express."
Even should they be success- ful in occupying Hankow this would not bring them nearer to victory, maintained the Marshal, since the Chinese would merely | change the front so that the Jap- anese would encounter even greater difficulties.

Simultaneously with the con- clusion of the new Anglo-German Economic Agreement, there was signed at the Foreign Ministry in Berlin yesterday, an agreement between Poland and Germany and a clearing agreement between Germany and Switzerland.

All three agreements were made necessary by the incorporation of Austria into the Reich.
The clearing agreement with Switzerland is in reality a pro- longation of a former agreement, although, with certain alterations. These largely concern provisions for the extension of German tourist traffic to Switzerland and the re- duction of interest transfer in capital turnover to 3.2 per cent. in respect of private debts, as well as regulation of goods traffic between Germany and Switzerland.
