Hundred New French Planes Coming From Indo-China

More Bombers Expected Before

End Of June

Hankow, To-day.

With the Japanese push to Hankow growing nearer and nearer, preparations are being actively completed in order to concentrate the entire Chinese Air Force here to defend the city. It has been reliably learned that 80 bombers and 100 pursuit planes have already been concen- trated in Hankow, or are on their way. At least 100 more bombers are promised to arrive here before the end of June, while 100 French pursuit planes_have started on their way to Hankow from Indo-China.

ac-

Chinese planes hitherto have, proceeding westward via Fengchiu been unable to participate active in the direction of Sinhsiang, ly in engagements on the various fronts, it has been pointed out, as there are not enough pursuit planes to protect bombers too far away from their base.

This also, it is stated, will ex- plain why the Chinese Air Force has not sent any pursuit planes to Canton in an effort to chal- lenge the Japanese in their daily raids there.

DEFENCE OF HANKOW The official military view that, owing to the smallness of the Chinese air force, planes must be concentrated at a few strategic centres to protect Chin- ese bombers against Japanese raids and also protect the Chin- ese bombers when they go on bombing missions.

These statements were made at a press interview while the Premier was travelling by train from Yoko- suka toward Tokyo.
