Annabelle knew of a quiet little mountain resort about 100 miles north of Hillside where she would not be re- cognised, and where she could hide away from the kindly yet persistent questioning of Hillsides' citizenry. She went there, heavy-hearted and lonely.
It was because of this loneliness. that she welcomed the attentions Brad Clayburn, a tall, dark youth in his early thirties, who had apparently sought out the mountain fastness for reasons similar to her own.

Although neither spoke of a secret sorrow, there existed between them' mutual understanding. They were the only young people at the resort, a fact that served to supplement a natural tendency for companionship.
Slowly Annabelle's heavy heart grow lighter. Heretofore her entire, atten- tion had been focused upon a single thought: Her career. She had found little to interest her in the men about Hillside. Yet now she discovered in Brad Clayburn something fine and ad- mirable, something that gave life # new meaning.
The mountains provided much to di- vert her mind from her recent disap- pointment. There was hiking and climbing, fishing and long horseback rides.
With Brad as her companion Annabelle found in the weeks that fol- lowed her arrival at the resort that there was a sheer joy to be derived from just living.
UNITED STATES
ASKS FOR TIME
London, Yesterday. Progress is being made with the proposal launched by the | British Government for a small neutral International Commis- sion consisting of competent officers to investigate any cases that might occur in Spain of the bombing of non-military ob- jectives.
The proposal is that the Com- mission should have its head- quarters. in France near the Spanish frontier and should pro- ceed, when requested to do so by either side in Spain, to prompt investigation of any bombing, incident.

A month passed before Brad Clay-wegian Governments are prepared, burn first spoke of his love. And then it came about in a curious way. They had climbed to the summit of Bald mountain and were seated upon promontory with miles and miles of velvety country at their feet. Anna- belle was aroused from her thoughts by the touch of Brad's hand on hers. She looked up quickly, to find his eyes watching her.
"It's glorious, isn't it?" he asked.
She nodded and looked quickly away, conscious of, the rush of blood to her cheeks, Brad drew close, and her heartbeat quickened. }
"Annabelle," he said softly, "tell me why you're here. Tell me what it is that makes you sad at times. Tell me, so that I can help you. Annabelle, love you,"
A sudden sense of ecstasy possessed her. She know in that instant that
each to nominate an officer to participate in the commission but the United States Government which was invited to take similar action is understood to have sent an interim reply suggesting that the proposal should be delay- ed pending the receipt from them of a definitive answer.
The invitation was confined to some of the countries against whom no charge of partiality in the Spanish conflict has been brought.
A statement is expected on the present stage of the proposal in. the Commons on Monday.-British Wireless.

ITALY'S NEW INITIATIVE Count Ciano's Long Talk With Lord Perth
NON-INTERVENTION MEETING NOW KEENLY AWAITED
Rome, To-day. The British Ambassador, Lord Perth, met Count Ciano, Foreign Minister, this evening and re- mained in conference with him for three- quarters of an hour.
Great secrecy is being maintained but it is under- stood that one of the subjects discussed was the possibility of the situation is Spain altering in such a way as to allow the Anglo-Italian Agree- ment to come into effect sooner.
It is understood that the view ex- pressed by Count Ciano in conversa- tion with Lord Perth was that Italy had done everything possible to se- cure the necessary conditions for the ratification of the Agreement and it seemed therefore, in the Italian view, unreasonable that the pact should be held up by the at- titude of France and the alleged continuance of arms exports across the Pyrenees to the Loyalists.
