KEY STAMMERS SCORES CAPITAL VICTORY IN WIGHTMAN CUP SERIES

London, To-day.

Rain interfered with the Wightman Cup series which commenced yesterday on the Centre Court, at Wimbledon, Great Britain and the United States sharing the spoils at the end of the day's play when each won one of the singles encounters.

Miss Kay Stammers provided a major sensation when after losing the first set at 3-6, she beat Miss Alice-Marble, America's first ranking player, in three sets.

The first set was featured by Mrs. Helen Wills Moody, staging magnificent smashing by Miss a comeback, won easily from Miss Stammers, but the American car-Peggy Scriven. There was a ding- ried the set when she aced hér dong battle in the second set when English opponent with glorious Miss Scriven was actually leading services.

4-3 and held four game points în the 12th game, but Mrs. Moody was much too steady and secured the match.

Miss Stammers' scintillating forehand drives to Miss Marble's backhand, deep in the corners, secured the second set for her, the games going with service until 6-5 when Miss Stammers took the

set.

American had no counter, and beat Miss M. C. Scriven (G.B.) which resulted in an unexpected, 6-0, 7-5. victory for the English girl.
