The sky was practically black with planes when the Japanese carried out the se- cond raid from 10.30 to 11.10 this morning.

At least 40 to 50 planes took part in the bombing, which was continuous and deafening, drowning out even the roar of the machines as they power-dived towards their objectives.

These included the Pearl River bridge, the old power house оп the Bund, the Government offices and the rairoad stations.

Bombs again fell on Wong hon and Taihang Roads, the residential district near Cen- tral Park and Sun Yat-sen University.

Observers of previous raids predict further very heavy casualties, and it seems the raiders will not be satisfied until this once-proud city is reduced to a shambles.

Foreigners on Shameen counted the explosions of forty-two high power bombs, after which they lost count, and it is believed that nearly 100 missiles altogether. were dropped.

One raider who power dived on the Pearl River bridge flew low over Sha- meen, and when he came out of his dive the insignia on his wings could plainly be.

seen.

Everybody is asking "How long will this be allowed to last?" and is wondering if the outside world is suffi- ciently informed of the terri- fic sufferings of the helpless civilian population.-Reuter.

Canton, To-day. Only by reason of the tre- mendous exodus of people from Canton can the toll of to-day's systematic bombing of the city be less than Saturday's carnage. Even so, a preliminary estimate places the killed and injur- ed at over a thousand.

One 500-lb. bomb dropped in a crowded tenement area and hundreds must have been killed and injured in this spot alone. Correspondent.
