A Malay coolie carrying the leather box containing a heavy theodolite, was suddenly pursued in the padi fields by a female buffalo.

The buffalo gained on him, it was within a few feet, when sud- denly the path along which they were running stopped abruptly on the bank of a river with a 20- feet drop on to dry ground at the foot of it.
